Great Southern Outdoors Quail Hunt in Alabama A lot of people call themselves avid bird hunters, mostly spending time hunting ducks, geese, or doves. If you’ve had a hard time finding a good dove hunt to take part in, lost the lease where your duck pond was located or just don’t want to travel as far to hunt geese, and you’re anxious to find a way to do some bird hunting, then a Great Southern Outdoors Quail Hunt
just might become your favorite wing shooting sport. Quail hunting has long been a tradition in the south and Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation in Union Springs, Alabama is the perfect location to participate in a quality hunt.

You arrive at the plantation the afternoon before your first morning hunt, check into your room, and meet the other gentlemen that will be joining you for the next few days. Your group will dine on a delicious meal that evening, and sit around the lodge talking about the next day’s hunt. The next morning you will have breakfast, gather your hunting gear together and load up to go to the quail field. There in the field you will meet your field guide and dog handler, waiting with wagons and dogs. After making sure you have everything you need, your guide will release two of the finest dogs you have ever laid eyes on. As soon as your guide releases the dogs they work through the long fields of brush and pines. Your guide will consciously conduct the dogs with a sharp blow of his whistle.

The lead dog will come to a sudden halt and point. Your guide will instruct you to gather around the dog, and then he (the dog) will ease in to flush the covey. The birds explode out of the tall brush and you begin shooting. Before you can fire the last shot, the dogs will retrieve the harvested bobwhite quail and returned them to your guide. You will continue through the fields all morning long repeating this process as your wagon man follows closely by with the wagon. You will be amazed how easily the dogs can leap through the briars to locate the birds.

Your group will hunt until time for the mid-day break and then head back to the main lodge at Great Southern Outdoors for another fantastic southern meal. Don’t be surprised if it is difficult to find the energy to make it back to the fields for the afternoon hunt. As evening leads to the end of a great day of hunting you will enjoy sitting and listening to stories of how generations of those living in south central Alabama have valued Southern Quail Hunting as a tradition and how they used to mount horses on Saturday afternoons and search for coveys until there was no daylight left.

When all is said and done, you just might find that in all of your many years of hunting experiences, that a Great Southern Outdoors Quail Hunt topped it all.

So what are you waiting for? Alabama Southern Quail Hunting is a click or call away.

Fall Bow Hunt

Fall bow hunters will have an endless supply of various oak trees to hunt over at Great Southern Outdoors. These species of oaks are: White Oak, Red Oak, Penn Oak, Saw Tooth Oak, and Live Oak. The sound of acorns dropping in the fall is a dinner bell for our whitetail deer.

One advantage of a fall bow hunt for a mature whitetail buck at Great Southern Outdoors is that the bucks are still in what we call, “bachelor groups”. This means you will see numerous bucks together in a group, opposed to the rut when the bucks have separated and are running alone.

The thrill and adrenaline rush of shooting a buck at 20 yards with a bow cannot be described with words. Only hunters can appreciate the silence of the woods, the footsteps of a whitetail deer, the thrill of the harvest, and the memories that are weaved in between.

Bow Maintenance

Bow maintenance is a tedious and time consuming process. Without proper bow maintenance, a hunter could have a very disappointing hunt.

A compound bow should go through a weekly maintenance check. Bowstrings and cables are to be waxed to prevent fraying or wearing. Look on the strings for any frayed or fuzzy parts, if found these parts should be waxed heavily.

Bow Cams have bushings that need to be oiled using suggested bow oil. Bow oil should be applied to the axles or bushings after a few uses. Some bows may not require oil so check with the manufacturer first.

Check Bow limbs for cracks or any sign of wear, this should be done before and after each use. If cracks occur, take your bow to a professional for further examination.

Check to make sure all bolts are tightened on your bow, such as the arrow rest or sight. Make wiping down your bow before and after each use to remove all dirt and grit part of your regular bow maintenance. These steps will help extend the life of the bow and keep it performing at the highest level.

For the best performance in the field, practice shooting your bow weekly from different distances and angles. This will simulate realistic situations and will help improve accuracy. Besides practicing at the standard increments of 10, 15, 25, and 30 yards, try to practice increments such as 17, 23, or 37. Shoot your bow from an elevated position as well as a flat shooting position. This will help to ensure you do not miss the buck of a lifetime or misplace a shot.

We invite you to come and hunt at Great Southern Outdoors not just for a fantastic fall bow hunt, but rifle hunts as well.
